I’m no Kiri Te Kanawa. The only thing we have in common is that we are New Zealanders and sopranos. If singers were cars, she’d be a Rolls Royce and I’d be a Mini. Although a Mini with delusions of, if not Rolls Royceness, at least Lexus-ity. I’ve sung for years in various choirs – currently with A Capella Singers – but only relatively recently had some formal training. My teacher is a coloratura soprano with years of training and performing overseas. Frankly there are lessons where I just want her to sing while I listen but that would be just lazy and indulgent. And so I open my mouth and hope that something good comes out. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn’t. I’ll write about both.
